No Where Else But in SODO ...
Did you know that SODO is the only area in the Northwest where I-5, I-90, Highway 99 and major heavy rail lines converge with key Pan-Asia shipping lanes?
SODO is the single most important transportation hub in the region and some say beyond. Port of Seattle modern container terminals link cross country rail and truck docks here, making it the state's busiest freight center.
SODO care begins successful 2nd year
Mayor Greg Nickels announced last week the City of Seattle will re-name a portion of South Atlantic Street after Edgar Martinez. Edgar played his last game as a Mariner on Sunday, Oct. 3, retiring after 18 remarkable seasons in the Major Leagues.
The portion of S. Atlantic St. is a short segment from 1st Ave. S. to 4th Ave. S., or essentially the section that runs past Safeco Field on the south. There is no need to change any business or property addresses as a result of the change.
"We are strongly committed to working with businesses in the area and the trucking community to address any issues such as wayfinding for drivers. The street sign change to this portion of S. Atlantic St. is permanent, but there will be an interim period when this portion of S. Atlantic St. will be signed with both names. An Edgar Martinez Drive S. sign will be mounted just below the S. Atlantic St. sign. There are roughly a half-dozen affected signs within this stretch. SDOT also will work with the Washington State Department of Transportation to ensure I-5 signs reflect this change," said SDOT's Director Grace Crunican.
The estimated cost of this name change is $6,000. Private citizens and sports fans have already indicated their willingness to help pay for the sign manufacturing and installation and the city expects to be fully reimbursed for the cost. Questions about the change can be directed to SDOT's Mike Estey at 684-8132.
